The New Zealand city of Rotorua is at the heart of one of the country's most important tourist regions. Rotorua is in the middle of one of the worlds most active geothermal regions and everywhere you look, you will see the evidence. Steam rises from every little valley and stream as water hits the hot rocks and right in the middle of town is the geothermal park where pools of boiling mud and geysers regularly spout for the visiting tourists. It makes a very spectacular display. In the nearby region is evidence of some of the world’s largest volcanic eruptions. Lake Taupo is the crater formed by a volcanic eruption that would make the Mt St Helens eruption look like minor occurrence. A new series of volcano's are just forming between Rotorua and Taupo in what in now called Waimangu volcanic valley. The existing volcanos of the Tongoriro National Park are just to the south and Mt Ruapehu is New Zealand's most active.
Rotorua is also close to the Waitomo caves which are famous for their glow worm displays. The Bay of Plenty lies just to the north and the whole region is full of forests and lakes which are all great to visit during your stay. Rotorua is mainly a tourist town and is full of excellent accommodation. There are plenty of best Rotorua hotels and holiday apartments on offer and if you are travelling by campervan or motorhome you will find some really well equipped parks to stay at. During the winter months the roads can be icy so it is wise to carry snow chains. Most of the organized tours that take tourists around the North Island will call and stay in Rotorua so it is wise to book ahead if you are travelling by car. If you are holidaying in New Zealand and you want to see the most important tourist destinations in the country, then Rotorua is an icon of the New Zealand tourist scene.
